European, and especially Mediterranean, agri-food systems in marginal rural areas face important drivers of change, mainly climate change, outmigration and aging populations and a fragile socio-economic system, hit by the recent economic crisis. These drivers seriously increase social key risks, which may include disruption to local livelihoods, failure of food security, loss of common-pool resources and traditional knowledge and practices. To deal with such challenges, rural areas need to develop adaptation strategies that reduce their vulnerability, and some authors suggest the need to re-think the way agri-food systems are defined, assessed and managed.
